Sacred Shores Project ~ Mafia Island ~ Tanzania

A Mission Rising from the Sea

Mafia Island, located along the stunning coast of Tanzania, is more than just a remote tropical destination; it is a sacred space where faith is nurtured, lives are transformed, and hope is reignited. On this serene island, the Salvatorians are currently the only Catholic religious congregation serving the people. Amid the spiritual needs and social isolation of island life, we have begun building a place where hearts can heal and souls can encounter God.

At the heart of this mission is a large multipurpose center, a place of social, prayer, rest, and community. The site includes a chapel and several buildings that, once fully developed, will not only support spiritual formation but also welcome visitors for vacation and tourism. Mafia is one of Tanzania’s most historic sites, home to ancient settlements, whale shark sightings, unmatched natural beauty, and one of the oldest marine protected areas in the world. These features make it ideal for sustainable mission-driven tourism.

The Sacred Shores Center serves as a gathering place for:

  • Youth groups from the mainland who come for retreats and spiritual formation
  • Missionary teams visiting the island for evangelization and outreach
  • Local children who come for catechesis, shared meals, and a sense of belonging
  • Families who gather to pray and grow together in faith

Who Is Being Helped?

  • Local children lacking structured spiritual education and safe gathering spaces
  • Youth from the mainland in need of faith-filled environments for retreats and leadership formation
  • Islanders seeking a deeper connection with God and the wider Church
  • Missionaries and volunteers requiring a stable base for ministry
  • Visitors coming to explore Mafia Island as a place of spiritual and historical significance

Why Do They Need Help?

Mafia Island is remote and underserved. It lacks many of the faith-building and community resources found on the mainland. Although the center is already playing a crucial role, the facility remains incomplete and under-equipped. The youth and families of the island long for spaces that inspire faith, promote formation, and foster genuine connection with others and with God.

How Are They Being Helped?

Through the Sacred Shores Project, we are:

  • Providing a spiritual and physical sanctuary for retreats, prayer, meals, and learning
  • Creating opportunities for youth to grow in leadership and Christian values
  • Supporting missionary efforts to reach isolated communities
  • Establishing a permanent base for the Salvatorian evangelization mission
  • Creating a peaceful, welcoming space for rest, pilgrimage, and tourism

Why Are We Asking for Support?

Your support will help complete and sustain the Sacred Shores Center, allowing more lives to be touched, more youth to be formed, and more hearts to encounter Christ. We believe the reach of faith should extend even to the most distant shores, and your generosity brings light and love to this growing island mission.

How Many Will Be Helped?

  • Over 1,000 children and youth annually, especially those coming on pilgrimage from the Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam
  • Dozens of local families who gather for prayer and community
  • Missionary groups and volunteers serving in both short- and long-term roles
  • An entire island community, spiritually underserved but deeply receptive

What Will Funds Raised Help Support?

  • Completing the main building: roofing, flooring, kitchen, and bathrooms
  • Purchasing essential furnishings and supplies: tables, chairs, Bibles, and teaching aids
  • Supporting retreats, youth programs, and catechetical activities
  • Developing a sustainable community kitchen for shared meals
  • Enabling transportation and materials for missionaries and visiting volunteers
